TRAUMA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

+ What counts as trauma? Trauma can include significant events such as abuse, accidents, or loss, but it can also involve chronic stress or relational experiences that impact emotional safety. To meet requirements for something like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the DSM-5-TR, trauma (Criterion A) involves "direct exposure, witnessing, or learning of actual/threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. It results in lasting adverse effects on functioning. PTSD occurs when these events cause persistent intrusion, avoidance, negative mood alterations, and heightened reactivity for over a month."

+ Can trauma cause anxiety or perfectionism? Yes. Many adults who experienced early trauma develop coping strategies such as perfectionism, overachievement, or emotional avoidance.

+ Is trauma therapy safe to do virtually? Trauma-informed therapy can be effectively conducted through secure virtual sessions while prioritizing emotional safety and pacing.

+ How does trauma affect adult relationships? Experiences from the past can shape how we perceive safety, trust, and connection in relationships. Individuals who have experienced trauma may find themselves becoming overly self-reliant, struggling to trust others, fearing abandonment, or feeling highly sensitive to conflict. These patterns are often protective responses that developed earlier in life. Through therapy, people can gain insight into these relational patterns and gradually build healthier ways of connecting, communicating, and establishing boundaries in relationships.
